Becoming a plumbers apprentice is a lot harder than it looks, or so I am told. I decided to take a brief trip down to the hotbed of local plumbing talk to find out what I could about becoming an apprentice plumber. It turned out that I discovered a lot and, as I would have guessed, found out that it was incredibly different than most people would have you believe. There is a certain truth about being a plumbers apprentice that belies a quiet responsibility to the trade, the lifestyle, and most importantly to some the glory of being a plumber. To start, you have to be an apprentice.
As it turns out, becoming a plumbers apprentice requires a myriad of skills and sets of skills that inevitably cross into one another as the profession unfolds. There are courses to take on mechanics, chemistry, electricity, and heating among others as the road to apprenticeship begins to unfold before the prospective plumber. The plumbing talk around the water pipe is basically that this schooling is massively under-represented in most technical circles and actually contains a great deal of intricate training that heavily influences the greatness of the profession. It takes intelligence to be a plumber.
The School Of Thought
There are also pre-technical skill requirements that must be in place before someone tries to take on the professional schooling of plumbing. These requirements feature quite a bit of mathematical skills and a great deal of safety training, including first aid and other pieces to the safety puzzle. Becoming an apprentice plumber means that you should have a fairly solid base of knowledge about other technical professions that transfers into knowledge about plumbing as a whole. Plumbers want safe workers with them in terms of hiring a plumbers apprentice, so they ensure that they are prepared with as much skill and knowledge as possible.
Becoming a plumbers apprentice also means that you should be able to describe the methodology that is used to assemble and fit various types of pipes. This is an important aspect to the job and should be a part of your base knowledge before you get on the job. You should also know how to test pipe systems, lay them out, and support the pipe systems. This leads to having the ability to explain and demonstrate various welding techniques and discuss the fundamentals of refrigeration and other techniques. This is all important in becoming a plumbers apprentice and should be learned thoroughly.
