In celebration of the anniversary of the Great Land Run in 1889 there will be a 2009 Norman Day Parade and Festival. Oklahoma settlement started with the Great Land Run this was the opening of the unassigned lands. A group of community volunteers will be organizing this festival. Funds will be partially provided by the City of Norman and the other half will be funded by individuals or businesses.
The 89er Wagon Train Association will kick off the festival for this year. It will be on April 17, 2009 from 7; 00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds. On April 18 at 10:00 A.M the 89er Day parade will start at the Downtown area of Norman Oklahoma. Then by 12:00 Noon at the Moore Lindsay Historical Museum the Blue Grass festival will be open.
The city of Norman got its name from an 1870 young surveyor Abner Norman who was commissioned to survey the Oklahoma territory. His crew burned the name Normans Camp on tree where they had their camps. When the first settlers came they saw these signs and just decided to keep the name Norman for its town.
For 31 years the 89′er Wagon Train Association has been having a wagon train every April and September. The Sooner, Teamsters & Trail Riders Association are the groups that composed the 89′er Wagon Train Association. The modes of travel when you join the train are on horseback, muleback, wagon or buggy. You will visit one camp to another passing by the beautiful countryside of Oklahoma. In order for you to have some excitement, fun and a taste of adventure for your vacation this Wagon Train will be the vacation that you are looking for.
The 89′er Day Parade will be on April 18 starting at 10:00 A.M. for this year the theme of the parade is Stake your ClaimMake it Green. The route of the parade will be Norman High School, at Main and Pickard, and goes East down Main Street to Crawford Ave. There will be no admission fee to attend the parade.
